Museum de Waag

Place
Deventer

The Waag can be found on the Brink. As Deventer grew into one of the most important Hanseatic cities on the river IJssel, especially due to the increase of annual fairs held in Deventer and the increase of merchants who came from far and wide to trade their products here, it was necessary to supervise measuring. And in 1528, De Waag was built as a weighing house for measuring and weighing all these merchandise.

So the Waag building played an important role in the commercial life of the city. Merchants from all directions had to have their goods weighed here, under the responsibility of the city government. Nowadays you can visit the Waag for special exhibitions and the old treasures of Deventer.
